A city sketch-machine received one impossible order: draw somebody important in a hurry. Its pencil jammed on the word hurry. The line kept traveling, turning Joe’s nose into a long, gentle radar built to detect panic before panic could detect him.
4:04 AM · BIDE IN, STAY A WHILE
Joe wandered beneath a broken neon sign that once read BIDE IN, STAY A WHILE. Rain erased the comma and the last word. Only BIDEN remained glowing above his head. Night-shift strangers took it as an introduction. Joe never corrected them.
6:20 AM · NO MEETING SCHEDULED
His sweater was shaded with leftover eraser dust, his shirt borrowed the blue of a slow morning, and his jeans were cuffed so the minutes could not touch the floor. The coral sneakers are reserved for his only emergency: an empty dance floor.
7:00 AM · THE CITY FINALLY EXHALED
Every phone in the room began ringing at once. Joe placed a pair of headphones over the noise and heard it as a slow vinyl beat. “Are you going to do something?” they asked. “Already am,” he said. “I’m giving the moment room.” From then on, he was Just a chill Biden.
